What Breed Of Small Dog Is The Easiest To Housetrain?

I want another small dog to be a playmate to my dachshund, but she was absolute hell to housebreak. I know that all dogs are unique and the easiness depends on the dog, but please, as a general rule, which small breed is easiest?

I know for a fact that the smaller the breed the harder they are to potty train. But from personal experience the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is the easiest to train. I currently have a 5 month old Cavalier and he is about 95% potty trained. I also have 3 other Cavaliers and they are potty trained as well.
Cavaliers have a similar temperament as the Golden Retriever.

Miniature Schnauzers are very intelligent and easy to train.

  3. why says:

Minature schnauzer. I have 2 and they just seemed to “get it” almost on their own. Good luck to you.

  4. Bozema says:

My sister’s Cavalier King Charles spaniels trained very easily.
Dachshunds can be challenging, as can Bichons and Lhasas.

I love this question! If I were you, I would rather pick a Jack Russell Terrier. It’s not that big either. You can always go to Google Images>>>Jack Russell/Jack Russel Terrier. Even if I haven’t have a dog, I’ve been looking forward to buy the Jack Russell Terrier.

Definetly not yorkies…or so I’ve been told. We have a min. schnauzer and she was super easy to house train….and they don’t shed! good luck!

I would say a small golden retrevier. They seem to be very affectionate, which leads to listening to you and being responcive to training.

To be honest, most small breeds are the hardest to housetrain. I would go get a dog who is a year old and already housetrained from the shelter or rescue. It’s a lot easier!

the small maltese are cute and very smart

Small breeds are hard to break because their size makes it easy to hide and if they get away with it even once they don’t get it! My daughter had a Chichi that we thought was housebroke until I moved my bed and discovered a whole floor of doggie landsmines under it!!!!!

I know exactly what you mean about Dachshund being hard to housebreak….been there, done that. I’ve always heard that smaller dogs tend to be harder anyway, not sure if there is any truth to that. Nomatter what breed you get, I would recommend doggy classes that would address this issue. Petsmart offers fairly cheap ones, about $100.

I would recommend a bichon frise/poodle mix or just a bichon frise or a yorkshire terrier. More so the yorkie because my fathers friend has owned like 4 and he said they were really easy to house train. Then, I have a friend and she has a bichon frise/poodle mix and she said he was really easy. Well, I hope this helps!!! Good luck!! ♥♥ ^_^

I’ve had the most luck with housetraining Cairn Terriers. Yorkshire Terriers have been a lot more difficult for me (it can be done, it just seems to take them longer). But it mostly just depends on the actual dog.
(I’ve also found that using a litter box to help with the Yorkshire Terriers works pretty well.)

  14. Mangy Coyote says:

German Shepherd (as a puppy, they are relatively small).

Yorkshire terrier they are fricken awesome

  17. SureKat says:

OUT OF MOST SMALL BREEDS, I THINK THE CAVALIER KING CHARLES WOULD BE THE EASIEST TO TRAIN. THAT WOULD BE FROM HOUSEBREAKING TO EVERYTHING ELSE. THEY ARE VERY SMART AND VERY SWEET DOGS AS WELL. ALL THE BEST;~)

  18. Nicole W says:

Miniature Pintcher..i dont think i spelt it right though
the regular sized ones are the third smartest dogs which means the third easiest to train

  19. Nurse Ratchet says:

Dachshunds are challenging anyway….after all they are a German breed. I don’t think there really is an answer? Key is consistency and crate use. Watch the body language as well and make the puppy go out often until it gets the hang of it.
